NATO’s Deterrence Policy Towards Putin’s Nuclear Threat
Nuclear war training will continue as planned by NATO
NATO on Monday started its long-planned annual nuclear exercises in northwestern Europe as tensions fester over the war in Ukraine with President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use any means to defend Russian territory.
Fourteen of NATO’s 30 member countries will take part in the exercises, which would involve about 60 aircraft including fighter jets and surveillance and refueling planes. U.S. long-range B-52 bombers will take part in the maneuvers, dubbed Steadfast Noon, the maneuvers will continue until Oct. 30. NATO is not permitting any media access.
NATO said that training flights will take place over Belgium, which is hosting Steadfast Noon this year, and over the North Sea and the United Kingdom. The exercises involve fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear warheads, but do not involve any live bombs.
The exercises were planned before Putin ordered Russian troops into Ukraine in February. Russia usually holds its own annual maneuvers around the same time, and NATO is expecting Moscow to exercise its nuclear forces sometime this month.
Many believe NATO’s response to any use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine should be non-nuclear but “devastating” NATO is in the process of delivering that message to Moscow.
The US national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, warned on Sunday that any nuclear use by the Kremlin would have “catastrophic consequences for Russia”, which had been “spelled out” in private conversations with Russian officials.
The Russian military has expanded enlistment with the official aim of sending 300,000 more soldiers into Ukraine, though there are reports the real goal is considerably more. The conscription has triggered unrest and a flight across Russia’s borders, particularly of draft-age men. Putin is losing the war in Ukraine, so his reaction to it is to launch mobilization. But the mobilization doesn’t seem to be helping him win the war. Ukraine’s armed forces had already defeated Russia’s professional soldiers, so the new conscripts who were poorly trained and poorly equipped were unlikely to change the course of the war. He is just using these men as fodder. So far, the war is popular in Russia because of the state-owned media and brain washing of the people. The majority of the Russian population about 80%, “And now since every Russian family will have to take their own position towards the war, knowing that their loved ones can be sent there and they can be killed the war may not be so popular.
This will be a long, long war, both sides will not give in, and NATO should not give in. Europe cannot be bullied by Putin; we cannot lose Ukraine no matter what.
The war crimes against Russia is mounting with the discovery of mass graves, murder of civilians, attacking civilians etc. but none of this will be resolved until after the war ends. Then hopefully Putin will be charged with these crimes. But truthfully, he will get away with his terror. Americans need to stay the course, it will be long and costly but we must do what is right and save any country which is our ally, part of NATO or wants to be. Screw Putin and Russia, screw the Saudis they are certainly not our friend. Iran, India, China can all go to hell as far as I am concerned. They are all evil, back stabbing dictators who would stab their own mother to death if they felt they could benefit.
As the information out there, fears about war with China in the near future, we need to bring back our manufacturing, steel, food, medical etc. the whole shebang which we need to survive a war. Thank God Joe Biden sees this and is trying to correct our semi-conductor issues with manufacturing here in the US. and other manufacturing issues. Americans need to figure it out we might have a war to fight and we need to be together, we need to understand we will have to tighten our belts do with less to survive.
