Slow Turkish drone, now taking out Russian Targets
RUSSIA’S INVASION OF UKRAINE
Nearly 3 million people have fled Ukraine from the unprovoked bombing of Russia. There have been 97 children killed from the bombs. Cities are devastated, Russia is committing war crimes and they are getting away with it. Russia has threatened the allies if they get involved it will create a World War. We are in a world war now. Russia is attacking democracy. Will Russia continue on into Poland? How far will the allies allow Russia to go? Until they wipe out the entire country? There needs to be more done to help the Ukrainians. Why are we letting the schoolyard bully to do what he wants?
I understand we don’t want a nuclear war, but we can’t allow the slaughter of these innocent people. Ukraine has done nothing to incite this war. Russia has gone nuts.
The Ukrainians are mounting a good fight against the Russians. The Ukrainians are holding them off, with few men. The Russian army is bogged down. How long will it be before Russia uses chemicals on the fighters. The US needs to step up and protect these people. Ukraine is the road block to keep Russia out of the rest of Europe.
Ukraine has made great use of Turkish Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles, which can loiter over tanks and artillery and destroy them with devastatingly accurate missile fire. The official said the U.S. is working to help keep the drones flying. These drones are slow and outdated but seems to be working.
Before the war began, military experts predicted that Russian forces would have little trouble dealing with Ukraine’s complement of as many as 20 Turkish drones. With a price tag in the single-digit millions, the Bayraktars are far cheaper than drones like the U.S. Reaper but also much slower and smaller, with a wingspan of 39 feet. As so often has been the case in this war, however, the experts misjudged the competence of the Russian military. Instead of Russia spending money on updated systems Russia spent billions on yachts and fancy homes, while their people live in poverty.
The drones should be easy for the Russians to blow out of the sky — or disable with electronic jamming. It is literally a World War I aircraft, in terms of performance. It’s got a 110-horsepower engine. It is not stealthy. It is not supersonic. It’s a clay pigeon — a real easy target. But Russia cant seem to shoot them down.
Electronic jamming, one of the mysteries of the Ukraine invasion is why the Russians haven’t made more use of what experts believe is their advanced electronic warfare capability. Russia is completely incompetent, which is good for the Ukrainians.
The drones are manufactured by Baykar Technology, whose chief technology officer, Selçuk Bayraktar, is a son-in-law of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Many experts have argued that another type of unmanned weapons system would be even more helpful to Ukrainian forces: a so-called kamikaze drone, a vehicle packed with explosives that is essentially a smart guided missile launched miles away from a target. Two Israeli companies make versions of those drones, the Harop and the Hero. The U.S. military fields a system called the Switchblade, the larger version of which can destroy tanks. That weapon isn’t approved for export except to the U.K.
Russia is using its long range missiles, their front line is not advancing. We wonder why? Is Russia up to something? Are they planning a chemical hit, and are they trying to protect their own army? Who knows.
I hope this unnecessary war stops soon. Power hungry Putin wants Russia back to its glory. I believe that Mr. Putin’s ship has sailed a long time ago. Putin’s Russia is not a super power but a poor poverty ridden country.
